Interstellar Politics Hour: Dateline 24 January 2320
The ISNN theme plays to the image of a generic-looking planet spinning around. "And now the Interstellar Politics Hour, condensed into an easily ignored timespan, as our viewers demand!"
The image fades quickly, then displays a newscaster seated at a desk.
"Good evening! Today in AEU politics... a routine vote on the military budget is turning into a major debate!"
A image appears of the AEU Senate in session. "At the heart of this debate: the question of funding for Steel Phoenix, including its command station and its dedicated fleets."
"The Steel Phoenix program was initiated by the National Patriots and spearheaded in particular by former President Best."
The image changes to that of a sharply declining line graph. "However, the popularity of the NaPa Party has been in steep decline since the so-called 'One Day War' over Hyperion, even though most of the party's policy positions continue to poll favorably with citizens."
"Many see the battle over Hyperion as foreign interference, the exact sort of incursion that Steel Phoenix promised to prevent. Hyperion's successful secession is seen by even many former NaPa supporters as the ultimate failure of the Steel Phoenix program, what some have taken to calling 'Best's boondoggle.'"
The image changes to that of the newscaster. "Indeed, without Best's populist influence, funding of the Steel Phoenix program appears to be something of a tough sell these days. Even many NaPa senators are balking at committing much of the military budget to it, fearing the ire of their constituents."
"And so what looked to be a routine budget vote has become a debate between two camps: NaPa hardliners against a New Republic and Green Party opposition joined by several NaPa defectors, with the future of the Steel Phoenix program hanging in the balance."
"Can President Metz keep his party in line while ensuring a future for Steel Phoenix? We will find out!" The newscaster smiles. "And that's all the time we have for today. This has been the Interstellar Politics Hour, only on ISNN!"
The ISNN theme plays as the camera slowly zooms away from the newscaster, who nods curtly.
